A new beginning

Welcome to the transformation of Sports Union. When I started this venture a little of two years ago, I wanted to give people something in Western New York that they really didn’t have before – a way to read in-depth feature stories on student-athletes in the area.

That’s basically how the idea of Sports Union came about. It wasn’t a heavy in thought process. It happened when I was watching a baseball game during the summer two years ago. I wanted to tell the stories of some of the most fascinating people in the area.

As I always say “Everyone has a story to tell.”

And that had been true on many occasions. We have had the pleasure to tell some great stories from Orchard Park to Bishop Timon to Hamburg and Lancaster. We even dove into college as well. For the past couple of years, we put out a special issue in November highlighting the young men and women who are serving our country and playing sports at the same time.

Now it’s time to take Sports Union to the next level. Over the past couple of months we have been trying to figure out a way to get the information out to our readers quicker. While we do have our website it just wasn’t the same. Our website was used more as a feeder to get people to the magazine each month. We wanted to find a way to take the magazine and give to you every day, week and month.

After meeting with designers and going over different concepts, we are proud to announce to the new Sports Union, a website that will have a magazine look to it. As you scroll through the site, you will notice we took the magazine feel and transferred it over to the website.

We still have our great feature stories, but with a lot more photos and other bells and whistles. This gives us a chance to tell your story in a different way. It gives us a chance to use better photos and take out quotes. And, It allows up to get our stories up in a more timely fashion.

No more waiting a month for a story on Cheektowaga Central soccer Ryan Morreta. Or waiting a full month to read stories on Maryvale’s Lexi Aquilino and Kari Murray. Now we can get those stories that you want to read up so much quicker.

But, it’s just not about the stories at Sports Union. It’s also about photos. In years past you would have to go to out facebook or twitter account to see photos from the game. Now, you can just hang out on our site and clink into photography and check out what we shot.

We are also excited to bring our subscription feature to you. Do you want the latest stories sent right to your email? Then just subscribe to Sports Union and you will get the stories sent to you. It’s free of charge, and it gives you a chance to keep up on some other friends you may know.

One thing the new Sports Union will not have is game stories. It was a decision that was not taken lightly. We decided to use our time more on features then trying to get a game story on the site every day. We are banking on the content that we are providing will have readers coming back for more.
Social media will still be big for us.

Now we are just a click away on our icon buttons. Plus, you will be able to share stories on facebook, twitter and email.

Thank you for reading the magazine for the past two plus years, now it’s time for a new beginning. We are excited about the possibilities this may bring, and hope you are as well.
